L2 Spanish and Italian Intonation: Accounting for the Different Patterns Displayed by L1 Czech and German Learners

von Dr. habil. Andrea Pešková (Universität Osnabrück, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)

Abstract: The present talk reports the results of an extensive postdoctoral research project (2015–2020) that explored the influence of two distinct language families, namely Germanic (German) and Slavic (Czech), on the intonation of two Romance languages, Spanish and Italian as second languages (L2). The investigation relied on production data collected through a Discourse Completion Task. One of the key contributions of this study is the introduction of the Developmental L2 Intonation Hypothesis, which aims to reveal universal patterns in the acquisition of L2 intonation. Moreover, the presentation will highlight the complex nature of L2 intonation, emphasizing also the importance of L1 transfer and offering valuable insights for enhancing language instruction methods. Finally, potential directions for future research will be outlined, too.
